Using sickness as an excuse for overeating

Using sickness as an excuse for overeating

I was sick this past week. In the past, I would overeat when I was sick. Before, food was my solution for every problem. I thought food would ease the discomfort of being sick. Instead of helping my illness,  I would feel worse because my stomach also hurt from eating too much.

I once depended on food to get me through every problem when I should have depended on God. Psalms 104:27 is, “They all depend on you (God) to give them food as they need it.” (Holy Bible, New Living Translation, 1996, 2004, 2007). I am not depending on God when I use excuses to overeat. I can also depend on God to help me through anything, including how to cope with minor illnesses. Psalm 103:3 is, “He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases.” (Holy Bible, New Living Translation, 1996, 2004, 2007).

I did two things this past week: depended on God to help me heal and took care of myself to get better. God is the great physician who heals me. I did go to my doctor and get a prescription to help me recover from this sinus infection. I also rested during the week, since my body needs rest instead of excess food to feel better. Last year, I was sick from the middle of October through the beginning of January. I think eating too much sugar kept my body from healing. I had stocked up on Halloween candy plus hit the half-price sale the day after Halloween. After this candy was gone, it was Thanksgiving with leftover sweets. The entire month of December was nonstop parties and treats. I have learned eating excess not only gives me stomach pain, but can cause me to become sick.

Since I hate being sick, I have finally learned to eat better. Determining when I am hungry is harder for me when I am taking antibiotics, since my stomach feels weird. To solve this, I eat at my normal times and eat the amounts I am used to eating. I also eat slower to make sure I stop eating when I am full. God is healing my body, and also helping me make it through an illness without overeating.
