Just because every store has been decked out in Christmas since September, I feel I am “late” by just now getting my tree and lights up. I enjoy sitting in my living room surrounded by twinkling lights. No time to relax when there is so much to do. Cookies need baking, dips and other party treats must be made. Perfectly entertaining white elephant gifts take work to find. It is challenging to squeeze in every party and holiday activity I want to do.
Isaiah 9:6 is, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given…And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Holy Bible, New International Version, 2011). Jesus is the reason for the season and brings us peace. I want His peace flowing through me this Christmas. Peace is more important than finding the perfect gift or bringing the awesome dish everybody loves to a party. I find peace when I focus on God.
Truly preparing for the holidays includes preparing my heart. I have always done advent themed devotions during December. I know it takes more than reading a few Christmas story devotions to change my heart. I need to take time to read His Word so it can soak in. When I put Jesus above party preparation, I grow closer to Him. Then, I wil be ready to embrace the Christmas season.
