I once turned to food to guide me through tough times. I would also have a “why me” attitude when faced with one battle after another. Why was I always facing distress and problems? First, it was the air conditioner in the car. Next, it was the washing machine, then the dryer, and finally the refrigerator. During each trial, I had to trust in God to guide me through the messyness and inconvenience.
James 1:2 is, “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy.” (Holy Bible, New Living Translation, 1996, 2004, 2007). It is hard to find joy when mopping up melted ice dripping from the freezer. I felt emotions ranging from guilt and anger while tossing thawed, dripping warm food. Being able to trust that God knows best and will give me the strength to get through this gives me joy. I know I am not alone, but God is by my side.
Trusting in God helps me to thrive, not just survive each trial. Some of my troubles are caused by my actions. God helps me to learn hard lessons, such as knowing when to keep my mouth shut. When I choose to trust and thrive, I grow closer to Him. This growth helps me to lean on Him when I am tempted to reach for food. I am growing spiritually and this growth acts as future insurance against overeating. No longer do I use stresses as an excuse to overeat and get sidetracked from my weight loss. God is helping me to eat healthy and deal with life’s challenges.
