I used to think it was okay to eat just a few more bites even when I was full. Eating a little bit of cake is better than stuffing a large bag of cookies down my body. Once I started overeating, I continued to stuff more food in my mouth. This kept me from losing weight. I hung onto these extra bites and told myself it was not wrong. Psalm 51:10 is, “Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit in me.” (Holy Bible, New Living Translation, 2015). God cleanses me, so I no longer want to overeat. I gave upRead More →

I once fasted from just one food item I loved, like candy, for Lent. However, I quickly found something else to eat instead of candy. When I put more effort into my fasting, I noticed weight loss because I ate less. As I matured in faith, I understood that fasting was more than giving something up. True fasting is giving something up to draw closer to God. Last year, I realized my speech was my hurtful to God. I fasted from gossip and saw I needed to use my words to build others up. Eating clean for me is easier when I don’t snack. SoRead More →

I try to eat more nutritious foods and less unhealthy treats. Just Trying to eat healthy is not enough to stop me from overeating, Sometimes, I want food to soothe emotional pain. My Christmas “to do” list includes cleaning for holiday guests, shopping for last-minute gifts, and baking treats. Actually, I am closer to being done than I have been in years past. In all this rush, I fail to celebrate Jesus, the reason for the this season. Busyness distracts me and keeps me from truly worshiping Him. Romans 12:1 is “And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Leftover pie and cookies from last week tempts me.  This year, I did not overeat on Thanksgiving Day.  However, I am getting careless and continue eating after I am full.  I don’t want five, or even one, pound of weight gain for Christmas. Instead, I need to lean on God for strength to only eat when I am hungry. Romans 12:2 is, “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.  Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good, pleasing, and perfect. God created food for us to enjoy.  For many years, I forced myself to eat vegetables and other healthy foods.  I craved sweets, hamburgers, and tacos, but avoided them.  When I indulged on cheat day, I felt guilt and fought temptation to continue eating.  I convinced myself sugar and fatty food did not agree with me.  Over the years, God reveled my problem was that I consumed too much food.  He commands me to only eat when I hungry and stop when full.  I learned to enjoy a variety of foods to satisfy my physical hunger. Isaiah 1:19 is, “If you are willing and obedient,Read More →

I have a “love hate” relationship with sugar.  I love the taste, but hate the calories.  Too much sugar makes my stomach ache and breath smell like rotten candy.  I used to stuff my body with gobs of sweets.  Once I started eating sugar, I was powerless to stop.  I was overweight and frequently got sick. So, I went “cold turkey” and quit eating foods with added sugar. I felt healthier, but missed something.  After a while, I turned to sugar free versions that never fully satisfied.  I did lose excess pounds, but missed my treats. This deprivation increased my lust for food.  I refusedRead More →
